Adrian Fernandez on Sergio Perez Formula One Announcement

“Monday’s announcement that Sergio will drive for the Sauber Motorsport Formula One team next year was a proud day for so many. As I have said, Sergio is like a son to me. I have had a relationship with his father and family for many years. When Carlos told me the news, I had tears in my eyes. I would like to congratulate not only Sergio but Carlos Slim, the architect of this project, and everyone at Escuderia Telmex for the realization of a dream.

“Telmex has helped not only me but so many drivers over the years and to see this work culminate with this great news is just tremendous. Mexico hasn’t had a driver in Formula One since 1981 with Hector Rebaque. Sergio, along with Esteban Gutierrez, will bring this excitement back to our country. This is fantastic for everyone that loves racing.

“Sauber is a strong team with a strong base and I think this alliance is going to be very successful and lay the foundation for a great future. I told Sergio that his life is going to change completely. He may be very young but he has the support of many people including myself to help him and let him focus on what he does best which is driving.

“I would describe his style as like that of a tiger. Some of his overtaking maneuvers are absolutely breathtaking. His ability to do that is unbelievable and, obviously, he is getting better and better. His future in Formula One is exciting and I have no doubt in my mind that he is a future champion. I am just glad that Carlos managed to put the final piece into this exciting new future that Mexico will have in Formula One after so many years, and I am thrilled to be a part of it in a small way.

“I will be keeping up with the young kids aside from Sergio like Esteban – another star in the making. I have no doubt that he will be in Formula One, too. There are a number of young drivers who are coming up through the ranks that I will be helping, obviously led by my good friend Carlos. Mexico’s future in racing is shining brightly.”
